Creating 8 Posters For Retailers Featuring the Game’s Factions

The Alderac Entertainment Group sold out of Paul Peterson’s shuffle-building card game Smash Up (see “‘Smash Up’”) at GenCon, but the game will be released to retail soon and AEG plans to support the launch with a set of 8 posters, each featuring one of the game’s different factions.  These posters will be available to retailers who are interested in promoting the fast-moving and fun card game.  Designed for 2-4 players, ages 8 and up, Smash Up takes just 45 minutes to play.

 

Players draft two of the eight 20-card faction decks and shuffle them together and start competing to smash bases.  The factions are what make it interesting as players will come with some strange combinations when working with the “aliens,” “pirates,” “zombies,” “ninjas,” etc. that make up the game’s competing groups.  Each combination provides a different playing experience.  Pirate/Alien decks have to be played differently than Pirate/Zombie, or Pirate/Dinosaur decks.  Players compete to “smash bases” and are awarded points based on their success.

 

AEG’s Smash Up shuffle-building card game includes 160 minion and Action cards, 16 base cards, and a 12-page rulebook.

Dungeon Crawler: Unbound

With this starter you can play Story Mode (single player), VERSES if your friends have a copy, or you can choose to expand your set with the other themed components to play cooperatively. ‘Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game’

Days of Wonder has announced the October release of Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game, which is based on the 2005 Shadows Over Camelot cooperative board game.  The new Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game (MSRP $25), follows in the footsteps of the original game as players work together to defend Camelot against rumors spreading around the kingdom.

 

The new Shadows Over Camelot card game is a fast-paced, stand-alone game for players ages 8 and up, which can be played solo or by 2-7 players.  It takes just 20 minutes to play a typical game as players take on the roles of the sons and daughters of the legendary Knights of the Round Table.  They must unite to overcome the threats to Camelot represented by a deck of Rumor cards, but they must be careful of the traitors in their midst.

Bruno Cathala, who designed both the original board game and the new card game with Serge Laget, explains the nature of the new game: “Shadows over Camelot holds a special place for co-designer Serge Laget and me.  We worked many hours on a game design which, while using the same basic mechanisms (cooperative, quests, and traitors…), would bring a new, very different, game experience.  Only recently did it become a refined card game, with an all new twist based on observation.  In the end it’s very different from the board game, while still keeping the basic elements that made the original Shadows over Camelot such a success.”

 

Shadows Over Camelot: The Card Game includes a deck of 62 Rumor Cards, 9 Knight Cards, 9 Loyalty Cards, 10 Quest Tokens, and 16 double-sided (black and white) swords.

‘Munchkin Apocalypse: Mars Attacks’

Licensed Booster Set Due in the Summer of 2013

The Topps Company and Steve Jackson Games have announced Munchkin Apocalypse: Mars Attacks, a 15-card booster set for Munchkin Apocalypse that will feature artwork from the original 1962 Topps’ Mars Attacks non-sports card set and will be released in the summer of 2013.

 

Topps’ classic Mars Attacks property, which has spawned comic books and feature films freely over the past 50 years, is currently in the midst of a major revival (see “‘Mars Attacks’ Gets Major Relaunch”) that includes books (see “Mars Attacks”), toys, and a new comic book series from IDW (see “‘Chew’ Creator Savors ‘Mars Attacks’”).  

 

The Mars Attacks’ brand of outrageous science fiction action and off-beat, dark humor should play well in the Munchkin Apocalypse universe.  Steve Jackson definitely sees the brand’s possibilities: “We are going to be completely faithful to the original Mars Attacks concepts.  We are going to blow things up without reason or mercy or even very good aim.  We will continue until the squishy Earthmen force us back to make a last stand on our dying desert home. It’s them or us.”

‘Winter’ Expansion for ’51st State’

Will Debut at Essen

Polish Game publisher Portal has announced that it will unveil Winter, an expansion for the 51st State card game designed by Ignacy Trzewiczek (Witchcraft, Stronghold) at the Essen Spiel 2012. 

The Winter Expansion introduces new rules, a new faction (Texas), and 54 new cards.  This expansion plays to the strengths of participants who favor sustainable development over unpredictable aggression, with the “Winter” version of the game lasting exactly six rounds of winter time.  According to the publisher, Winter is the perfect choice for strategy-oriented gamers.

 

Winter is an expansion for the post-apocalyptic, multi-player card game 51st State that released here in the U.S. by Toy Vault in 2011 (see “’51st State’ Comes to the U.S.”).  No word yet on when Winter will be released here in North America.

Each time a player dies, his survivors climb another rung up the political ladder, taking the deceased’s title and all the wealth and power that comes with it. The player who can secure enough wealth and the title of Overlord first will become the True Ultimate Supreme Overlord (and win the game).
